About Khövsgöl

Khövsgöl is Mongolia's northernmost province, defined by Lake Khövsgöl (Khövsgöl Nuur), one of the world's oldest and deepest freshwater lakes, and by the taiga, mountains and wide steppe that surround it. Its capital and largest town, Mörön, serves as the region's administrative, commercial and transport hub.

The area's cultural identity is strongly nomadic, and it is one of the few places where Tsaatan (Dukha) reindeer herders continue a traditional way of life in the northern taiga. Bronze Age deer stones at Uushig and Buddhist and shamanic traditions add layers of history to a landscape that has supported herding communities for centuries.

Most visitors use Mörön as a base before travelling about 100 km north to Khatgal, the small settlement at the southern tip of Lake Khövsgöl, where ger camps line the shore. Beyond the lake, the Khoridol Saridag mountains, Darkhad Depression and remote northern districts offer trekking, horse riding, fishing and encounters with nomadic families.

Mörön has a working atmosphere of government offices, markets, banks, schools and a regional hospital, while tourism around the lake brings seasonal employment and small guesthouses, shops and restaurants. Naadam celebrations in July and local markets give the province a lively summer rhythm, though services remain modest compared with Ulaanbaatar.

For leisure travellers, Khövsgöl offers one of Asia's most striking freshwater landscapes, while business and development visitors come for regional administration, livestock, mining-related and tourism investment. Daily flights link Mörön Airport with Ulaanbaatar, making the province a practical starting point for northern Mongolia.

Where to Stay

Ger camps along the southern shore of Lake Khövsgöl, especially near Khatgal, provide the most atmospheric base. Mörön offers guesthouses and simple hotels for overnight stops, while more remote camps and family stays suit travellers heading north.
