About Katukurunda Airport
Katukurunda Airport is a small joint civil and military airfield located near Kalutara on Sri Lanka's southwestern coast. It primarily supports Sri Lanka Air Force operations, approved training flights and private tour aircraft, while also serving as a domestic aviation point for the surrounding Western Province.
The airfield was originally established by the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, and the present Sri Lanka Air Force station was set up in 1984 to reactivate it. Located about 40 km south of Colombo along the A2 highway, the airfield has a single runway designated 11/29 with a bitumen surface and limited handling facilities for medium and light aircraft.
Katukurunda sits roughly 4.6 km southeast of Kalutara town, making it a convenient aviation point for travellers heading to Kalutara, Bentota, Beruwala and other southern coastal destinations. Road access via the A2 connects the airfield to Kalutara and Colombo, with taxis and private transfers available for onward travel.
Although it is not a large commercial terminal, the airfield functions as a practical gateway for light aviation, training activity and approved civil flights in the Kalutara area.
