Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ)

Kangerlussuaq Airport is the main international gateway to western Greenland and a central hub for Air Greenland's domestic network. Built as the United States Sondrestrom Air Base in 1941, the airport was handed over to civilian Greenlandic control under Greenland Airports in 1992 and has since served as one of the country's most important aviation links with Copenhagen and the rest of Greenland.

The airport sits at the head of Kangerlussuaq Fjord in the Qeqqata municipality, just a short distance from the settlement centre. Its long single runway is among the few in Greenland capable of handling larger aircraft, and the compact passenger terminal handles international, domestic and charter flights.

Because Kangerlussuaq has no road connections to other Greenlandic towns, onward travel is made mainly by connecting Air Greenland flights to destinations such as Nuuk, Ilulissat and Sisimiut. Within Kangerlussuaq itself, taxis and rental cars provide access to the settlement, hotels and excursion points such as the nearby ice cap area.

Passengers can use the terminal's café, duty-free and souvenir shops, lounge and free Wi-Fi while waiting for flights. The airport's straightforward layout and compact size make transfers between international and domestic services relatively simple.
