Kadena Air Base is a major United States Air Force installation in central Okinawa and a key hub for military and authorized passenger air travel in the Asia-Pacific region. The airfield dates to World War II, when it was built by Japanese forces and later taken over by the United States in 1945, after which it was expanded into one of the largest American air bases in Asia.
The base spans Okinawa City and the towns of Kadena and Chatan, with two parallel runways and a single AMC passenger terminal serving military flights, Space-A travel and related passenger movements. It is located roughly 21 km north of Naha, Okinawa's main city and regional gateway.
Road connections, including the Okinawa Expressway, link the base area to Naha, Chatan, American Village and Okinawa's coastal resort destinations. Local buses and taxis also serve nearby routes for onward travel.
