About JMSDF Minami Torishima Air Base
JMSDF Minami Torishima Air Base is a small military airfield on Minami-Torishima (Marcus Island), Japan's easternmost island in the Ogasawara Islands. Operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, it supports weather observation, government logistics and periodic military flights to this remote Pacific outpost.
The airfield dates to 1935, when the Imperial Japanese Navy built a strip to serve a meteorological station. The facilities were damaged during World War II and were later transferred to Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force control in 2009. Today the base has a single asphalt runway, designated 05/23, with a length of about 1,372 metres.
The island lies roughly 1,900 km southeast of Tokyo and about 1,300 km east of Iwo Jima. There are no commercial passenger services, public terminals or road links; access is restricted to authorized military and government flights, including JMSDF transport aircraft and JASDF flight inspection aircraft.
Because of its isolation, the base functions as an operational and logistics facility rather than a public travel gateway. Passenger amenities such as shops, lounges, car rental and scheduled ground transport are not available, and it should not be treated as a regular airport for travel planning.
