About Iwo Jima Air Base

Iwo Jima Air Base is a military airfield located on Ioto (Iwo Jima), a volcanic island in the Ogasawara Islands about 1,200 km south of central Tokyo. The island has no permanent civilian population and is administered as part of Ogasawara Village, Tokyo, with the airfield used mainly by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

The airfield traces its origins to the airfields built on the island during the Second World War, including the former Central Field that now forms the core of the modern base. Returned to Japan in 1968 with the Ogasawara island group, the base is used for military operations, training and emergency landings, and the island is also used for U.S. military training.

The base has a single asphalt runway, 07/25, measuring about 2,650 metres, and no public passenger terminal. Scheduled commercial flights do not serve the island, so access is normally limited to approved military or government aircraft and emergency diversions.

Because of its remote location and restricted status, travelers cannot rely on public transport links. Journey planning around Iwo Jima Air Base is therefore relevant mainly for authorized flights and specialist travel rather than ordinary passenger connections.
