About Iejima Airport
Iejima Airport is a small regional airport serving Ie Island (Iejima) in Okinawa Prefecture. Opened on July 20, 1975 as a project related to the Okinawa International Ocean Exposition, it features a 1,500-meter runway and a compact terminal.
Located in Ie Village, the airport mainly handles occasional charter and general aviation traffic. Scheduled flights were suspended in February 1977 because of restrictions from nearby U.S. military training airspace and limited demand, so most travelers reach the island by ferry from Motobu Port.
The airport sits in the central part of the island and has a single-story terminal with basic passenger facilities. From Naha, the island is reached by road to Motobu Port followed by a roughly 30-minute ferry crossing, with onward access to Ie Village and the airport.
Despite its small size, the airport remains an important infrastructure asset for Ie Island and supports special flights, emergency access and local aviation needs.
