About Hingurakgoda Airport
Hingurakgoda Airport is a domestic airport and Sri Lanka Air Force base located near Polonnaruwa in the North Central Province. It is also known as Minneriya Airport and serves as one of the gateways to Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. The airfield lies about 12 kilometres north of Polonnaruwa and has a single runway. Historically established as RAF Minneriya during the Second World War, the site later became SLAF Base Hingurakgoda and now supports limited civil aviation alongside military operations. Civil access currently centres on domestic charter services, including flights from Colombo-Ratmalana, while government plans aim to develop the airport for larger civilian and eventually international operations. The facility therefore functions mainly as a regional connection point for travellers visiting Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Minneriya.
