About Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt

Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt is the main international airport serving Hamburg and the surrounding metropolitan region in northern Germany. Opened in 1911, it is one of the world's oldest airports still operating at its original location and was renamed in 2016 in honour of former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.

Located in the Fuhlsbüttel district about 8.5 km north of the city centre, the airport connects Hamburg with domestic and international destinations and serves both business and leisure travellers. Its two passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, are linked by a central Airport Plaza and handle a wide range of airline operations, arrivals, departures and passenger services.

The airport is connected to Hamburg by the S-Bahn line S1, which reaches the central station in about 25 minutes, as well as by buses, taxis, private transfers and road links. The S-Bahn station is located directly beneath the terminals.

With modern passenger facilities including shops, restaurants, lounges, free Wi-Fi and onward travel options, the airport functions as a major gateway for visitors arriving in Hamburg and northern Germany.
