About Haikou Meilan International Airport
Haikou Meilan International Airport is the main international airport serving Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, and a key gateway to the island's tropical destinations. Opened on 25 May 1999 to replace the former Dayingshan Airport, it has grown into one of the region's most important domestic and international hubs.
Located about 25 km southeast of central Haikou in Meilan District, the airport entered a new phase in December 2021 with the opening of its Phase II expansion, giving it two terminals and two runways. Terminal 1 mainly handles domestic flights, while Terminal 2 serves international and regional routes alongside some domestic operations.
The airport is connected to Haikou by high-speed rail via Meilan Railway Station, as well as shuttle buses, city buses, taxis, ride-hailing services and road links, making onward travel to the city centre and across Hainan straightforward.
Passengers can use duty-free shopping, restaurants, cafés, lounges, currency exchange and other facilities, and in 2011 the airport became the first in China to open an offshore duty-free store.
