About Haibei Qilian Airport
Haibei Qilian Airport is a small domestic airport serving Qilian County in the Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai province. Opened in August 2018, it was developed as Qinghai's first tourism-oriented airport and mainly supports travel to the Qilian Mountains and surrounding high-altitude grasslands.
The airport is located about 35 km east of the Qilian county seat, at an elevation of approximately 3,163 metres, making it a high-plateau airport. Its infrastructure includes a 3,400-metre runway and a single terminal building of roughly 3,000 square metres, with the capacity to handle high-altitude aircraft types such as the A319 and B737-700.
It primarily connects Qilian with Xining, Qinghai's provincial capital, giving travellers a faster alternative to long road journeys through the mountainous region. From Xining, passengers can continue to other domestic destinations.
Ground access is by road, with taxis, private transfers and rental cars available for the drive to Qilian town and nearby scenic areas such as Zhuo'er Mountain. As a compact regional airport, it offers straightforward arrivals, departures and basic passenger services rather than large-terminal amenities.
