About El Trompillo Airport
El Trompillo Airport is the older and more centrally located of the two airports serving Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia's largest city. Opened in 1920, it was the city's only airport for more than 65 years, until Viru Viru International Airport took over international traffic in 1985. Today El Trompillo focuses on domestic and regional flights, general aviation and military operations, and it resumed scheduled commercial services in 2025 with regional routes operated by Boliviana de Aviación.
The airport sits in the south of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, about 2 km from the main square, Plaza 24 de Septiembre. Its single passenger terminal and roughly 2,773-metre runway serve short regional routes to destinations across Bolivia's lowlands, including towns such as Guayaramerín, Riberalta, Yacuiba, San Ignacio de Velasco, Puerto Suárez and Rurrenabaque.
Because of its location inside the urban area, El Trompillo offers some of the fastest city-centre access in Bolivia. Taxis and shared transport wait outside the terminal, and the airport has short-stay parking near the main entrance, so reaching hotels, business areas and transport hubs in Santa Cruz takes only a few minutes.
Although its terminal is compact and its facilities are simpler than those at Viru Viru, El Trompillo remains a convenient regional hub for travelers moving between Santa Cruz and eastern Bolivia.
