Darbhanga Airport is the primary air gateway for Darbhanga and the surrounding Mithila region in northern Bihar. Commercial operations began on 8 November 2020 under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, bringing scheduled civil aviation services to the city for the first time and connecting it with major domestic hubs.
The airport operates from a single interim terminal building that handles domestic flights, with check-in counters, security screening, a departure lounge and basic passenger facilities. A foundation stone for a larger permanent terminal was laid in March 2024 as part of plans to expand capacity for growing regional traffic.
Located about 6 km from Darbhanga city centre and reachable via National Highway 27, the airport is served by taxis, auto-rickshaws and private transfers. Darbhanga Junction railway station is also close by, providing onward rail connections for passengers continuing their journey by train.
With domestic links to cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, the airport supports business, education, healthcare and tourism travel in the region, as well as local industries such as Makhana production and the area's Madhubani art heritage.
