The heliport dates back to the late 1970s, when it was built to support a large state-owned pig farm on Comino. After a disease outbreak devastated Malta's pig population, breeding animals were flown in by helicopter, and the operation continued into the 1990s and early 2000s. The farm closed around 2011, and helicopter activity has been rare since then.
