About Żurrieq
Żurrieq is one of Malta's oldest towns, set in the southern part of the island between fertile farmland and a dramatic stretch of coastal cliffs. It remains a traditional limestone village in character, yet its location places travellers close to some of Malta's most distinctive coastal scenery and prehistoric sites.
The town's centre is dominated by the Parish Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, built between 1632 and 1658 and holding works by Mattia Preti. Nearby Ħal-Millieri preserves a largely abandoned medieval settlement with the chapel of the Annunciation from around 1450 and a restored chapel of Saint John the Evangelist. Żurrieq also has its own recognisable Maltese dialect and a strong feast culture, with summer processions, band marches and fireworks for Our Lady of Mount Carmel in July and Saint Catherine in early September.
A short distance towards the coast, Wied iż-Żurrieq is the main access point for the Blue Grotto, a series of sea caves reached by small boats where clear water reflects deep blue light. Close by, the UNESCO-listed Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra megalithic temples offer a window into Malta's prehistoric past, while the surrounding coast is popular for walking, swimming and diving.
Everyday life revolves around the parish, village squares, band clubs and a modest selection of cafés and family-run restaurants serving Maltese dishes. The hamlets of Bubaqra and Nigret add quieter, rural corners, while the atmosphere remains far more relaxed than in Malta's larger resort and harbour towns.
For travellers, Żurrieq works well as a practical base in southern Malta. It sits only minutes from Malta International Airport and provides straightforward road access to Valletta, Marsaxlokk fishing village and the southern coast, making it useful for both leisure visitors drawn to heritage and coastline and business travellers needing quick airport and island-wide connections.

Żurrieq Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early autumn offer mild weather for exploring Żurrieq, the coastal paths and nearby temples. Summer is best for boat trips to the Blue Grotto and the village feasts in July and September, though it can be hot and busy.
How to Get Around
Żurrieq is connected to Valletta and other Maltese towns by local bus routes, while a car gives more flexibility for reaching Wied iż-Żurrieq, Ħaġar Qim and the southern coast. Taxis and private transfers are useful for short trips to the airport or the Blue Grotto.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Żurrieq itself is limited, so many visitors choose guesthouses and farmhouses in nearby southern villages or base themselves in Valletta, Sliema or St Julian's. Staying close to the airport and southern coast suits travellers focused on the Blue Grotto and prehistoric sites.
Food & Drink
Local cafés, band-club bars and family-run restaurants serve Maltese staples such as pastizzi, ftira, rabbit stew and fresh fish. Snack bars and kiosks at Wied iż-Żurrieq are handy before or after Blue Grotto boat trips, while village feasts bring seasonal street food and sweets.
