About Żebbuġ Malta

Żebbuġ, known by its historic title Città Rohan, is one of Malta's oldest inland towns, located in the island's Western Region around seven kilometres from Valletta. Its Maltese name means olives, a reminder of the olive groves that once surrounded the settlement and still shape its rural edges.

Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan elevated Żebbuġ to city status in 1777, an honour marked by the De Rohan Arch at the town's entrance. The centrepiece is the Parish Church of St Philip of Agira, built between the late 16th and mid-17th centuries and attributed to the Cassar family of architects; its baroque interior houses a celebrated silver statue of the saint blessed by Pope Pius IX.

The old centre is a maze of narrow streets, limestone townhouses, band clubs and small squares that reveal layers of Maltese village life. A heritage walking trail links landmarks associated with figures such as linguist Mikiel Anton Vassalli, while restored farmhouses and the surrounding countryside give the town a distinctly local character away from the coastal resorts.

Żebbuġ's position makes it a practical base for exploring central and northern Malta. The walled city of Mdina, Rabat and the airport are within a short drive, and regular bus routes connect the town with Valletta in about twenty minutes.

Though quieter than Malta's tourist hubs, Żebbuġ comes alive during the feast of St Philip in early summer, with street decorations, band marches and community celebrations. This blend of history, local tradition and convenient location appeals to travellers seeking an authentic Maltese town as well as business visitors needing quick access across the island.
