About Għajnsielem

Għajnsielem is a harbour village on the southeastern coast of Gozo, Malta's second island. Its name means 'peaceful spring', and the village is best known as the arrival point at Mġarr Harbour, where the Gozo Channel ferry connects the island with Ċirkewwa on mainland Malta.

The village's maritime character is balanced by a deep sense of history. The 18th-century Fort Chambray, begun by the Knights of St. John as a planned fortified city, now overlooks the harbour from the cliff top. Below it, the small Lourdes Chapel stands above the water, while the neo-Gothic parish church of Our Lady of Loreto dominates the skyline. The medieval chapel of St. Cecilia, dating from around 1540, sits near the old St. Cecilia Tower on the village outskirts.

Għajnsielem's waterfront is a lively place to watch ferries and fishing boats or dine along the old harbour jetty. Nearby Xatt l-Aħmar bay offers quiet swimming, snorkelling and diving above shipwreck sites, and boat trips run to Comino and the Blue Lagoon. Coastal walking routes lead toward the neighbouring village of Qala, with views over the Gozo Channel.

Local life is shaped by strong community traditions. The August feast of Our Lady of Loreto fills the village with processions, band marches and the distinctive Balzunetta quarter celebrations, while the Bethlehem f'Għajnsielem nativity village draws visitors at Christmas. Around the harbour and village, restaurants serve fresh seafood and Gozitan dishes such as ftira, ġbejniet cheese and pastizzi.

For travellers, Għajnsielem works as both a gateway and a relaxed base. Regular buses link the village with Victoria and the rest of Gozo, and accommodation ranges from harbour hotels to self-catering residences and farmhouses. Its position between Mġarr Harbour, Comino and the island's rural villages makes it a practical starting point for exploring Gozo.
