About Chañaral Airport
Chañaral Airport is a small civil aerodrome serving the coastal city of Chañaral in the Atacama Region of northern Chile. It supports regional connectivity for the local mining industry, government services and travellers heading to nearby Pan de Azúcar National Park.
The airport reopened in May 2025 after being out of operation since 2007, following renovation work that included resurfacing the asphalt runway, installing a new perimeter fence and adding a helicopter landing point. It operates as a compact single-terminal facility with one runway designed for light aircraft and small regional turboprops.
Located about 2 km northeast of the city centre, the airport is reached quickly by road, with private transfers, taxis and local vehicles providing the main onward links to Chañaral and surrounding coastal areas.
With its basic passenger facilities and straightforward layout, the aerodrome functions as a practical local access point rather than a large commercial hub, while offering onward road connections toward Caldera, Bahía Inglesa and Copiapó.
