About Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama is a small adobe-built town on the high-altitude Altiplano of northern Chile, about 2,400 metres above sea level. It sits at the edge of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, and is the main base for exploring salt flats, volcanoes, geysers and high-altitude lagoons.
The town grew around an oasis on the San Pedro River and has a long history linked to the Atacameño, or Likan Antai, people. The hilltop Pukará de Quitor fortress, the colonial-era San Pedro Church and the Padre Le Paige Archaeological Museum reflect the area's pre-Hispanic and Spanish heritage.
Surrounding landscapes are the main draw. Visitors head to Valle de la Luna, the Atacama Salt Flat and Chaxa Lagoon with its flamingos, the steam vents of the El Tatio geysers and the turquoise Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons. Clear, dry skies also make the area one of the world's best places for stargazing.
The compact centre is organised around Caracoles Street, where tour agencies, restaurants, cafés and small shops line the dusty streets. Accommodation ranges from simple hostels to desert lodges, and most excursions leave early in the morning for the surrounding natural attractions.
Tourism drives the local economy, so the town is highly relevant for leisure travellers interested in nature, photography and outdoor adventure. It also attracts astronomers, researchers and travellers crossing northern Chile, making it a practical and atmospheric base for exploring the wider desert.

Atacama Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
San Pedro de Atacama is a year-round destination thanks to its dry, sunny climate, but autumn and spring bring mild days and fewer crowds. Nights are cold in every season, while winter's clear skies are especially good for stargazing and the high season runs through the warmer summer months.
How to Get Around
The town centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, while most desert sites are reached through guided tours with shared or private vehicles. Taxis and rental cars are available for independent travel, but many remote routes require high-clearance vehicles and advance planning.
Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in the compact centre along and around Caracoles Street, where hostels, boutique hotels and restaurants are concentrated. A smaller number of lodges on the town's outskirts offer quieter surroundings and better views of the open desert sky.
Food & Drink
San Pedro de Atacama's food scene blends Chilean and Andean flavours, from grilled meats and empanadas to quinoa, llama and other highland ingredients. Cafés, bakeries and small markets sit alongside casual restaurants, many of them clustered on Caracoles Street.
