About Castlereagh Lake Seaplane Base
Castlereagh Lake Seaplane Base is a water aerodrome serving Hatton and Sri Lanka's central highlands. Located on Castlereagh Reservoir, it has been licensed as Sri Lanka's first water aerodrome and supports domestic seaplane services operated by Saffron Aviation under the Cinnamon Air brand.
The base sits roughly 4 km from Hatton at an elevation of about 3,600 ft (1,090 m), with a water runway of around 2,680 m on the reservoir. It links the hill country to Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo and other inland water bodies through scenic seaplane flights.
Because it is a seaplane base rather than a conventional airport, operations are simple and compact: passengers board from a shoreline jetty and are met on arrival for onward travel by road. The nearby town of Hatton and the surrounding tea estates are the main destinations served.
From Hatton, travellers can continue to hill-country destinations such as Nuwara Eliya, Adam's Peak and the tea plantations, or connect onward by train, taxi or private transfer. The base is most useful as a scenic, time-saving gateway into Sri Lanka's central highlands.
