About Beijing Nanyuan Airport

Beijing Nanyuan Airport opened in 1910 during the Qing Dynasty and was China's oldest airport. For more than a century it served as a joint civil-military facility, and from 1986 it was the main operating base of China United Airlines, which focused on domestic routes. The airport stood in Fengtai District, about 13 km south of Tian'anmen Square, making it closer to central Beijing than Beijing Capital International Airport. A new passenger terminal opened in 2013 with a designed handling capacity of around six million passengers, improving on the older facilities. Beijing Nanyuan Airport closed to commercial flights on 25 September 2019, and its China United Airlines routes were transferred to the newly opened Beijing Daxing International Airport. Ground access was provided mainly by road, with taxis and airport shuttle buses connecting passengers to central Beijing. Although it has ceased commercial passenger operations, Nanyuan remains an important part of Beijing's aviation history as the country's first airport and one of its longest-serving airfields.
