About Baucau Airport
Baucau Airport is a former international airport located roughly 6.5 km west of Baucau, Timor-Leste's second-largest city. Historically known as Cakung Airport, it has one of the longest runways in the country and was built to handle large aircraft, but today it is mostly used for military and emergency operations rather than scheduled passenger services.
The airport's asphalt runway is approximately 2,509 m long, giving it greater capacity than Dili's Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport. During the Indonesian occupation and the 1999 crisis it served as a military and humanitarian hub, and in recent years the runway, perimeter and a small warehouse have been renovated.
Because civilian passenger flights are not currently scheduled, the airport has no permanent customs, immigration or ground-handling services. Commercial operations require approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Timor-Leste, and nighttime flights are limited to exceptional cases.
For travelers heading to Baucau and eastern Timor-Leste, the airport is about a 10–15 minute road journey from Baucau town, with onward connections available by road to Dili and other parts of the region.
