About Manufahi
Manufahi is a rural municipality on Timor-Leste's south coast, centred on the highland town of Same, its administrative capital. Set against Mount Kablaki and stretching to the Timor Sea at Betano, the region combines mountain villages, coffee gardens, traditional weaving and quiet coastal landscapes.
Same carries deep historical weight as the home of liurai Dom Boaventura, who led the 1911–12 Manufahi rebellion against Portuguese rule; the Dom Boaventura Memorial Park in town honours that resistance. Local tais weaving preserves distinctive Manufahi patterns, while colonial-era church buildings and rural hamlets reflect Timor-Leste's layered past.
Visitors usually base themselves in Same and explore nearby Mount Kablaki (2,062 m), a demanding trek with sweeping views, as well as forested valleys, hot springs and traditional markets. On the coast, Betano offers a long, low-key beach backed by fishing villages, where fresh seafood shacks and calm shoreline contrast with the cool highlands.
Manufahi's economy is rooted in farming—rice, corn, cassava and highland coffee—alongside fishing and handwoven textiles, while Betano has been identified for energy and refinery development. It is not a major business hub, but its road link to Dili and role in the Tasi Mane corridor give it growing regional relevance.
For travellers, Manufahi suits nature-focused and cultural itineraries rather than city tourism: a roughly 115 km drive south from Dili through mountain scenery leads to trekking, beaches, weaving workshops and a slower, authentic side of Timor-Leste. Business visitors and site crews heading to the south coast also use Same as a practical overnight stop.

Manufahi Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to November is the most practical time to visit Manufahi, with drier roads, clearer mountain views and easier access to Same and Betano. The wet season from December to April brings heavy rain that can make rural and mountain roads difficult.
How to Get Around
Manufahi is reached by road from Dili, around 115 km over mountain routes, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended. Local buses and mikrolets connect Dili with Same, while transport within the municipality is limited, so private drivers, rental vehicles or guided trips are the most reliable options.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is concentrated in Same, with a small number of guesthouses and simple lodges serving travellers and visiting workers. Options are basic, so it is best to book ahead; Betano and coastal villages offer very limited places to stay.
Food & Drink
Meals centre on rice, corn, cassava and local vegetables, with fresh fish, lobster, squid and octopus available at beach-side eating huts in Betano. Highland coffee from northern Manufahi, local markets and small family-run eateries round out the food experience.
