Oecusse Route of the Sandalwood International Airport is the main air gateway to the Oecusse-Ambeno Special Administrative Region, an exclave in western Timor-Leste. Opened in 2019, it replaced the former Palaban airstrip and brought modern, international-standard air access to the region.
Located close to Pante Macassar, the airport has a single two-storey passenger terminal and a 2,200-metre runway that can handle category 4C aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320. The terminal includes 12 check-in counters and separate boarding halls for domestic and international flights.
Construction began in 2015 and was carried out by PT Wijaya Karya, with the design by Portuguese practice Allby Arch. The airport supports passenger services, a cargo terminal and supporting operational buildings, strengthening connections for both domestic travel and international access to the exclave.
The airport is a short road journey from Pante Macassar, with transfers, taxis and rental cars available for onward travel. Dili, the national capital, lies around 150 km to the northeast, making OEC a practical entry point for visitors heading to western Timor-Leste.
