About Baucau

Baucau is Timor-Leste's second-largest city, set on a cool hillside roughly 125 km east of Dili along the north coast. Around 500 metres above sea level, it feels markedly different from the capital: smaller, slower and quieter, with tiled-roof Portuguese-era buildings spilling down steep streets toward the sea. It serves as the capital of Baucau Municipality and a natural gateway to the country's eastern districts.

The city's identity is rooted in its Portuguese colonial past. The Old Town, or Vila Antiga, retains arcaded buildings, churches, squares and the striking Mercado Municipal, a large market hall built between 1928 and 1934 that still functions as a busy produce market. Above it, the Pousada de Baucau, a restored colonial-era government rest-house with a tiled swimming pool and coastal views, is the town's best-known landmark. The 1999 post-referendum violence left many buildings gutted, and some scars remain visible in the quieter streets.

Baucau's surroundings add much of its appeal. West of town, Wataboo Beach offers a long palm-lined stretch of white sand and simple beachside warungs, while the clear spring-fed pool at Wai-Usu is a popular local swimming spot. Inland, the Seven Caves at Venilale are WWII-era tunnels cut into the limestone hillside, and the salt lakes at Com lie further east along the coast toward Jaco Island.

As an administrative and agricultural centre, Baucau plays an important regional role in trade, education and government services. The Baucau Airport, formerly Cakung, sits about 6.5 km west of town and mainly handles cargo and charter operations, so most travellers arrive by road. The city is a common overnight stop on journeys between Dili and the far east.

For leisure travellers, Baucau offers heritage architecture, beaches, caves and a relaxed pace rarely found in the capital. For business and transit visitors, it provides regional connections, practical guesthouses and a convenient base for the eastern municipalities. Its cooler air and distinctive old-town character make it one of Timor-Leste's most rewarding stops outside Dili.

Baucau Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to November is the most reliable period, with June to September offering the clearest skies and most comfortable evenings. The wet season from November to April brings afternoon thunderstorms and can make some minor roads muddy, so mornings are best for walking the Old Town.

How to Get Around

The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot, though the climb back up from the market is steep. Local taxis and mikrolet vans shuttle around town, while a hired car with driver or a scooter is useful for reaching Wataboo Beach, Wai-Usu and the caves at Venilale.

Where to Stay

The Pousada de Baucau is the standout heritage option, with colonial rooms, a tiled swimming pool and terrace views. Simple guesthouses in the Old Town, mid-range options in the New Town, and beach bungalows at Wataboo provide alternatives across budgets.

Food & Drink

Local staples and the district's well-known kulu dish sit alongside Portuguese-influenced cooking at the Pousada and simple Indonesian and Portuguese menus at Victoria Café and Amalia. Beach warungs serve grilled fish, and the local palm spirit tua sabu is worth a cautious taste.
