About Batticaloa International Airport
Batticaloa International Airport is the main airport serving Batticaloa and Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. Located about 2.4 km southeast of the city centre, it functions as a compact gateway for domestic flights, charter services and regional travel to the east coast.
The airport was first opened in November 1958 and later operated as a military airfield before being redeveloped for civil aviation. Its rebuilt passenger terminal and upgraded runway reopened to scheduled passenger traffic in March 2018, and it was subsequently recognised as an international airport.
The airport has a single passenger terminal and a 06/24 runway, with civil operations managed by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited. It shares the site with military aviation, and most regular services connect Batticaloa with Colombo and other domestic points.
Ground access from the terminal is provided mainly by taxi and tuk-tuk, with the city centre only a short drive away. The airport also offers convenient onward access to east-coast destinations including Pasikudah, Kalkudah and Arugam Bay.
