A modern passenger terminal was inaugurated in 2022, and the airport operates a 1,500-metre asphalt runway suitable for small and medium-sized aircraft. Commercial services have been suspended since early 2025, while executive, charter and tourism-related flights continue to use the airfield.
The airport sits on the edge of Barreirinhas, roughly a kilometre from the town centre, making onward travel to hotels, pousadas and river tour departure points quick and straightforward. São Luís, the state capital, is about 255 km away by road, with a journey of around four hours.
Although facilities are compact, the terminal covers the essential services for arrivals and departures, including check-in, security screening, baggage claim and basic passenger amenities.
