Avu Avu Airport (AVU)

Avu Avu Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Avu Avu and communities along the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal Province in the Solomon Islands. It provides a vital air link to the capital, Honiara, for an area where road access is limited and weather-dependent.

The airport operates a single grass runway, 14/32, approximately 750 metres long and 30 metres wide, at an elevation of about 8 metres above sea level. Its compact size and rural setting mean services are typically limited to small aircraft and domestic community flights.

The airstrip was closed during the ethnic tensions of 1998–2001, when essential services across Guadalcanal were disrupted. In 2025, the Solomon Islands Ministry of Communication and Aviation signed agreements with Guadalcanal Province and landowner groups to rehabilitate and expand the airstrip, with the aim of restoring regular air services.

Located roughly 62 km southeast of Honiara, Avu Avu Airport is reached mainly by air, with limited road connections along the coast. Once operational, the airstrip is expected to improve access to health, education, agriculture and tourism opportunities for communities in East and South Guadalcanal.
