About Guadalcanal

Honiara is the capital of Solomon Islands and the country's main commercial gateway, set on the northern coast of Guadalcanal. The city lines a narrow coastal strip near the Mataniko River, with government offices, the port at Point Cruz, busy markets and low-rise neighbourhoods framed by green hills.

Guadalcanal is best known internationally for the 1942–43 Pacific campaign of World War II, and that history remains a defining part of the local landscape. Visitors can explore the Guadalcanal American Memorial, the Vilu War Museum and wartime relics, while shore and wreck diving sites around the island reveal sunken ships and aircraft.

Central Honiara concentrates much of the city's daily life along Mendana Avenue and around the Central Market, where fresh produce, fish and handicrafts are sold. The National Museum and cultural centre offer an introduction to Solomon Islands traditions, and nearby neighbourhoods such as Kukum, Panatina and Henderson extend the city eastward.

Beyond the centre, attractions include the Honiara Botanical Gardens, Mataniko Falls and beaches such as Bonegi, a popular snorkelling and diving spot. The city is also the administrative and business hub of Solomon Islands, with hotels, conference venues, embassies, NGOs and the main port supporting government and commercial travel.

For visitors, Honiara works as both a destination in its own right and a base for exploring Guadalcanal's war history, rivers, reefs and coastal villages. Leisure travellers come for diving, culture and World War II heritage, while business visitors arrive for meetings, projects and events in the capital.

Guadalcanal Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from May to October are generally the most comfortable for sightseeing, diving and travel around Honiara and Guadalcanal. August is notable for World War II commemorations, while the wetter season from November to April brings heavier rain and higher humidity.

How to Get Around

Honiara is served by taxis and shared minibuses that run along the main roads, and much of the central area around Point Cruz can be walked. Rental cars and private drivers are useful for reaching war memorials, beaches and sites outside town, while boats connect to nearby islands.

Where to Stay

Central Honiara and the Point Cruz waterfront offer convenient access to shops, banks, restaurants and the port. A smaller number of hotels, guesthouses and lodges sit outside the centre, closer to beaches, dive sites and quieter coastal areas of Guadalcanal.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on fresh fish, tuna, taro, cassava, sweet potato, greens and coconut, with the Central Market a good place to try produce and snacks. Hotels, Chinese restaurants, cafés and small eateries around town provide a mix of Solomon Islands and international meals.
