About Albina Airport
Albina Airport, also known as Albina Airstrip, is a small airport in the town of Albina, capital of the Marowijne District in eastern Suriname. It lies near the Maroni River, which forms the border with French Guiana, and has long served as a minor domestic gateway for the region.
The airstrip is one of the oldest in Suriname, in use since 1953, when the Piper Cub of Kappel-van Eyck named Colibri landed there from Zorg en Hoop Airport in Paramaribo. For decades it mainly handled domestic charter flights to Paramaribo-Zorg en Hoop, operated by small local carriers. Operations were reported to have ceased permanently in 2025, although no official reason or exact closing date was released.
The airport has a single grass runway and minimal passenger infrastructure, reflecting its role as a small regional airstrip rather than a commercial terminal. Albina itself is about 145 km by road from Paramaribo, the capital, and sits close to the Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni border crossing into French Guiana.
Travelers using the Albina area generally continue by road, with options including private transfers, shared taxis, buses, rental cars and chauffeur services to Paramaribo, the border crossing and other parts of eastern Suriname.
