About Cần Thơ
Cần Thơ is the largest city and commercial hub of Vietnam's Mekong Delta, often called Tây Đô, or the Western Metropolis. Set along the south bank of the Hậu River, the city combines a lively riverside centre with canals, orchards, floating markets and the rice-growing countryside that defines the delta.
The river shapes daily life in Cần Thơ. Cái Răng Floating Market is the city's best-known attraction and is most vivid at dawn, when boats crowd the waterway to trade fruit and produce. Ninh Kiều Wharf and its riverside promenade form the social heart of the city, while the cable-stayed Cần Thơ Bridge, the historic Bình Thủy old house and Trúc Lâm Phương Nam Zen Monastery show the region's mix of modern engineering, colonial-era architecture and Buddhist heritage.
Central Ninh Kiều district concentrates most hotels, restaurants, cafés and nightlife. Cái Răng offers riverside resorts and easy access to the floating market, and Bình Thủy is home to the airport and quieter heritage sights. Museums and pagodas, including Cần Thơ Museum and several Chinese and Khmer temples, add depth to the local culture.
As the delta's education, trade and logistics centre, Cần Thơ is home to Cần Thơ University, a major river port and strong agribusiness and food-processing sectors. In 2025 the city was administratively merged with Hậu Giang and Sóc Trăng provinces, expanding its territory to the coast and strengthening its role as the regional capital.
For travellers, Cần Thơ works both as a destination and as a base for exploring the wider Mekong Delta. River fish, bánh xèo, hủ tiếu and tropical fruit dominate local menus, and the international airport plus major road links make the city practical for leisure visits and business trips across the delta.
