About Mersin
Mersin is a major Mediterranean port city on Turkey's southern coast and the administrative centre of Mersin Province. Its identity combines a working port, a long palm-lined seafront and modern commercial districts with a hinterland of citrus groves, ancient sites and Taurus Mountains scenery.
History is layered throughout the city and province. The Yumuktepe mound records thousands of years of settlement, while nearby Tarsus preserves St. Paul's Well, Cleopatra's Gate and a Roman-era street. Along the coast, landmarks such as Kızkalesi (Maiden's Castle), the Cennet-Cehennem sinkholes, Anamur Castle and Alahan Monastery extend the region's archaeological reach, complemented by the Mersin Archaeology Museum and Naval Museum.
Neighbourhoods give the city distinct rhythms. Akdeniz holds the historic core, port and old bazaar; Yenişehir is the modern centre for hotels, shopping and business; Mezitli offers residential beachfront areas and universities; and Toroslar spreads inland. The waterfront, Atatürk Park and Mersin Marina are popular gathering places for locals and visitors.
Mersin is also an economic and logistics hub. Mersin Port is one of Turkey's largest, supported by a free trade zone, agricultural exports such as citrus and bananas, and a strong regional business network. The city's food scene features tantuni, cezerye and künefe, while cafés and restaurants line the coast.
For travellers, Mersin offers Mediterranean beaches, deep history and mountain escapes, as well as practical connections for trade and business, making it relevant for both leisure visitors and professionals.
