About Kars
Kars is a compact, high-altitude city in northeastern Turkey, near the Armenian border, and the capital of Kars Province. It feels like a gateway between the Caucasus and Anatolia, defined by stone architecture, open plateau landscapes and long, snowy winters.
The city's history spans Armenian, Seljuk, Ottoman and Russian periods. The medieval city of Ani, about 42 km east near the Arpaçay River, was a Silk Road capital and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cathedral, mosque, caravanserai and city walls. Within Kars, Kars Castle, the basalt Stone Bridge and Russian-era Baltic-style buildings reflect these layers.
Central neighbourhoods such as Kaleiçi, Ortakapı, Yusufpaşa and Cumhuriyet show the 19th-century Russian grid plan and Baltic architecture. Museums include Kars Museum and the Caucasian Front War History Museum at the Bloody Bastion, while the Fethiye Mosque and Kümbet Mosque are notable landmarks.
Kars is known for its food culture, especially aged Kars kaşarı and gravyer cheeses, honey and roast goose. The seasonal Eastern Express train journey and nearby Sarıkamış ski resort, with its "crystal snow", have made winter tourism an important part of the local economy.
For travellers, Kars offers a distinctive mix of history, architecture, winter sports and border-region atmosphere, relevant for cultural sightseeing as well as growing regional business and trade links toward the Caucasus.
