About Çanakkale
Çanakkale is a port city on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles strait in northwestern Turkey, where the Aegean Sea narrows toward the Sea of Marmara. Its waterfront promenade, known as the Kordon, gives the city a relaxed, sea-facing character and links it visually with the Gallipoli Peninsula on the opposite shore.
The region's history stretches from ancient times to the modern era. Nearby Troy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves layers of settlement spanning thousands of years, while the Gallipoli Peninsula across the strait was the setting of the 1915 Gallipoli Campaign. Memorials, cemeteries and the Çanakkale Naval Museum keep this wartime heritage central to the city's identity.
Landmarks include Çimenlik Castle, the Ottoman-era Saat Kulesi clock tower and Aynalı Çarşı, a historic bazaar known for its mirrored interior. A large wooden Trojan Horse used in the 2004 film Troy stands on the waterfront, and the modern Troy Museum presents artifacts from the archaeological site.
The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with cafés, fish restaurants and shops along the Kordon and around Cumhuriyet Square. Beyond the city, the province offers the island vineyards of Bozcaada, the beaches of Gökçeada, the stone streets and harbour of Assos, and quiet villages scattered across the peninsula.
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University gives the city a lively student population, while ceramics, agriculture and tourism shape the local economy. For both leisure and business travellers, Çanakkale serves as a practical base for Troy, the Gallipoli battlefields and the wider Aegean coast, with ferry, bus and air connections linking it to Istanbul, Bursa and İzmir.

Best Time to Visit
Spring and early autumn offer mild weather for exploring Troy and the Gallipoli battlefields. Summer is best for beaches and the islands of Bozcaada and Gökçeada, while late April draws visitors for Anzac Day commemorations.
How to Get Around
The city centre is compact and walkable, especially along the Kordon. Local minibuses run to Kepez, Troy and nearby villages, ferries cross the Dardanelles to Eceabat and Kilitbahir, and taxis, car rental and private transfers cover longer journeys.
Where to Stay
Staying near the waterfront and Cumhuriyet Square puts restaurants, ferries and landmarks within walking distance. Kepez suits visitors near the university, while the Gallipoli Peninsula and Bozcaada offer more rural, island-based stays.
