About Adıyaman

Adıyaman is a city in southeastern Turkey and the capital of Adıyaman Province, best known as the gateway to Mount Nemrut and the ancient Commagene Kingdom. It lies in a region shaped by the Euphrates River and the Atatürk Dam, with a compact city centre and a strong provincial character.

The city has a long settlement history, and the nearby Perre Ancient City preserves rock-cut tombs and a large necropolis from the Roman period. Across the province, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mount Nemrut features the 1st-century BC tomb sanctuary of King Antiochus I, with giant stone heads and statues at an elevation above 2,000 metres.

Important landmarks around Adıyaman include the Roman Cendere Bridge over the Kahta River, the Karakuş Tumulus, the Arsemia archaeological site and the Adıyaman Museum. In the centre, the Oturakçı Pazarı offers local crafts, dried fruits, pistachios and regional products, while parks and tea houses shape daily life.

Adıyaman's economy combines agriculture, food processing and public services with growing heritage tourism linked to the Commagene route. The local food scene is known for Adıyaman-style çiğ köfte, kebabs, bulgur dishes, grapes and pekmez.

For travellers, the city works as a practical base for Mount Nemrut sunrise excursions and nearby archaeological sites, as well as for business and government-related visits. After the 2023 earthquakes, much of the city is being rebuilt, while its role as a regional centre for heritage tourism and public services continues.
