About Kalmar
Kalmar is a compact coastal city in southeastern Sweden, in Kalmar County and the historical province of Småland. It faces the Kalmar Strait, and the long Öland Bridge connects it to the island of Öland. With around 42,000 residents, Kalmar combines a walkable medieval core with a relaxed seaside atmosphere and a strong sense of history.
Kalmar's identity is closely tied to Kalmar Castle, which began as a 12th-century watchtower and was later rebuilt as one of Sweden's finest Renaissance castles. The 1397 Kalmar Union between Sweden, Denmark and Norway was signed here, and after the Kalmar War and a devastating fire the city moved in the 1640s to Kvarnholmen. The baroque Kalmar Cathedral, designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and completed in 1703, still dominates the main square.
Kvarnholmen remains the city's centre, with shops, cafés, restaurants and preserved sections of the 17th-century city wall. The Kalmar County Museum houses exhibitions on the royal warship Kronan, while the Kalmar Art Museum sits in the city park. Nearby, the Old Town (Gamla stan) has historic houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and Kattrumpan beach offers swimming close to the centre.
Kalmar is also a regional hub for education and business, home to a seaside campus of Linnaeus University and a growing technology and services sector. Its food scene ranges from Småland specialities such as kroppkakor with lingonberries to Baltic seafood and international dining, with many restaurants around the guest harbour and Stortorget.
For visitors, Kalmar works well as both a short historic city break and a base for exploring Öland and the wider Småland region. Its compact centre, frequent rail links and coastal setting make it practical for leisure travellers and business visitors alike.
