About Västernorrland
Sundsvall is the largest city in Västernorrland County, set on Sweden's northern Bothnian coast about 395 kilometres north of Stockholm. After a devastating fire in 1888, the centre was rebuilt in stone, earning it the nickname Stenstaden, the Stone City, and giving it one of Sweden's most distinctive historic cores.
The city's late-19th-century architecture is concentrated around Stortorget and the wide Esplanaden boulevard, with landmarks such as the neo-Gothic Gustav Adolfs Church and ornate stone trading houses. Kulturmagasinet, housed in repurposed harbour warehouses, brings together the city library, Sundsvall Museum and exhibition spaces.
Just outside the centre, Norra Berget open-air museum offers panoramic views, historic buildings and walking paths, while the island of Alnö and the surrounding Medelpad countryside add beaches, forest and outdoor recreation. The UNESCO-listed High Coast lies nearby to the north.
Sundsvall has long been a hub for forestry, pulp and paper, and today also hosts banking, insurance, public data centres and the main campus of Mid Sweden University. Its restaurants, cafés, summer festivals and year-round events give the city a lively local culture.
For travellers, Sundsvall combines a compact, walkable city centre with easy access to northern Sweden's coast, industry, conferences and nature, making it a practical stop for both leisure and business.
