About North Darfur

El Fasher is the capital of North Darfur and one of the most historically significant cities in western Sudan. Built around a former sultan's palace at roughly 700 metres above sea level, it has long served as a caravan post, market centre and administrative hub connecting Darfur with trade routes across the Sahel.

The city dates to the late 18th century, when Sultan Abd al-Rahman al-Rashed established it as the capital of the Darfur Sultanate in 1791–92. It developed around the royal residence, and the Sultan Ali Dinar Palace, built in 1912, now houses a museum with artefacts from the sultanate period. British rule and Sudan's independence later reinforced El Fasher's role as the regional seat of administration.

Central landmarks include the Sultan Ali Dinar Palace Museum, the Sultan Ali Dinar Mosque and the lively Grand Market, where millet, sorghum, groundnuts, fruit and livestock have been traded for generations. Al Fashir University, opened in 1991, draws students from across Darfur, while the Jebel Marra massif rises to the south of the city.

Historically, El Fasher functioned as a distribution hub for grain, gum arabic and livestock moving through Darfur and toward markets in Libya and Egypt. From 2007 to 2020 it hosted the headquarters of UNAMID, the joint UN–African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, reinforcing its position as a centre for humanitarian and administrative work.

Since the Darfur conflict began in 2003 and intensified again in 2023, the city has absorbed large numbers of displaced people in camps such as Zamzam and Abu Shouk, and the security situation has become highly unstable. El Fasher remains important for aid workers, researchers and officials working in Darfur, but ordinary leisure travel is not currently advisable.

North Darfur Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The traditional dry season from November to February brings cooler, more comfortable temperatures, while the rainy season runs roughly from June to September. Travel planning, however, is currently dominated by the security situation rather than the weather.

How to Get Around

Within the city, shared minibuses, taxis and three-wheeled rickshaws are the main local options, and the central area is compact enough for short walks. Movement outside the city is currently restricted and requires careful security planning.

Where to Stay

Guesthouses and small hotels are concentrated around the city centre, and international organizations have long used guarded compounds for staff. Availability and safety vary with the current situation, so accommodation should be arranged in advance through local contacts.

Food & Drink

Local meals are built around kisra, a sorghum flatbread, and asida, a millet porridge, served with stews, okra and grilled meat. Markets supply seasonal produce such as groundnuts, watermelon and hibiscus, though food access has been severely affected by the conflict.
