About West Kordofan
Al-Fulah is the capital of West Kordofan State in central-southern Sudan, a compact administrative and market town lying roughly 600 kilometres southwest of Khartoum. Set on open semi-arid plains near the northern edge of the Nuba Mountains, it serves as the main commercial and service centre for surrounding farming and pastoral communities.
The town is best known as the seat of the University of West Kordofan and as a centre for local government, markets and small-scale trade. Its low-rise buildings, central market and simple street layout give Al-Fulah a practical, unhurried character shaped more by regional administration than by conventional tourism.
The surrounding state is one of Sudan's important gum arabic and livestock-producing areas, with seasonal millet and sorghum farming, acacia woodland and open grazing land defining much of the landscape. West Kordofan was restored as a separate state in 2013 after earlier administrative reorganisations.
Al-Fulah is reached mainly by road, with El Obeid Airport about 260 kilometres to the northeast providing the nearest scheduled air connection. Transport and accommodation are limited, and unpaved routes can become difficult during the June-to-September rainy season.
Because the region has been affected by Sudan's conflict since 2023, visitors should follow current government and security advice and travel with reliable local arrangements in place. For government, humanitarian and business visitors, Al-Fulah remains a functioning regional centre at the heart of a resilient agricultural landscape.

West Kordofan Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cooler dry season from November to February is the most practical period for travel in West Kordofan, with lower temperatures and better road conditions than the rainy months. Travel between June and September can be difficult because of muddy unpaved routes, and security conditions should be checked year-round.
How to Get Around
Al-Fulah is small enough to explore on foot in the centre, while shared taxis, minibuses and occasional lorries connect towns across the state. For longer or rural journeys, a private 4x4 vehicle with a local driver is usually the most reliable option.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited in Al-Fulah, with basic guesthouses and lodges serving government, NGO and business visitors. El Obeid, roughly 260 kilometres to the northeast, offers more established hotels for travellers moving through the wider Kordofan region.
Food & Drink
Local meals in Al-Fulah centre on Sudanese staples such as kisra, fuul, grilled meat, stews and sweet tea, with small restaurants and market stalls serving the town. Supplies are simple, so visitors should expect practical rather than elaborate dining.
