About West Darfur
El Geneina, also spelled Al-Junaynah or Geneina, is the capital of West Darfur state in western Sudan, close to the border with Chad. The town stretches along the Wadi Kaja and is known for its mango orchards, green gardens and the rocky outcrop of Jebel Sultan, which give it a distinctive setting on the semi-arid Sahel.
The town developed as the centre of the Dar Masalit sultanate and remains an important home of the Masalit people. Its history includes the 1910 Battle of Kirinding, fought in the nearby Kaja valley during the French colonial advance into the Wadai region. Today, the market district, government offices and the University of El Geneina anchor civic life.
Neighbourhoods cluster around the central market and along the wadi, while Jebel Sultan is a popular weekend outing spot with views over the town. Mango groves and small irrigated gardens supply local markets, and the town serves as a trade gateway between Darfur and eastern Chad.
El Geneina is also a regional administrative and education centre, home to one of Darfur's larger universities. Cross-border trade, livestock and agriculture support the local economy, while international agencies and relief organisations have long had a presence in the area.
The security situation in El Geneina has deteriorated sharply since 2021, with major violence and mass displacement during the war that began in 2023. The city is not currently a safe or accessible tourist destination, and anyone considering travel should monitor the latest government advisories and humanitarian reports.

West Darfur Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The most comfortable months are from November to February, when temperatures are lower and dry-season roads are generally more passable. Rainfall is concentrated from June to September and can make routes difficult. Current security conditions mean any visit should be planned only after checking the latest travel advisories.
How to Get Around
El Geneina is compact, and the central market, offices and many guesthouses can be reached by tuk-tuk, taxi or on foot. Roads outside the centre are often unpaved and rough, especially in the rainy season, and movement is heavily constrained by the security situation.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited and consists mainly of basic local hotels and guesthouses near the town centre. Aid workers and visiting delegations have often stayed in secured compounds, and current options are severely affected by the conflict.
Food & Drink
Local food centres on Sudanese staples such as ful, kisra, grilled meat and spiced stews, with mangoes a well-known seasonal product of the area. Tea stalls and small restaurants around the market serve everyday meals, though food availability has been affected by displacement and shortages.
