About Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick is a compact, rural parish on the leeward coast of Saint Vincent, centred on the historic fishing town of Barrouallie. Steep green ridges, narrow valleys and a working waterfront give it a quieter, more traditional rhythm than the capital, Kingstown, which lies roughly 16 km to the south.

Barrouallie was founded by French settlers in 1719 and is among the oldest European settlements on Saint Vincent; it also served for a time as the island's capital. That history survives in the town's old streets, stone church, and a maritime culture long tied to fishing and the traditional blackfish, or pilot whale, fishery that has increasingly shifted toward whale watching.

The parish is best known to many visitors for Wallilabou Bay, where scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed. Along the same coast, Wallilabou Heritage Park offers a riverside picnic area, small waterfall, restaurant and film-set relics, while local operators run boat trips, snorkelling excursions and whale-watching tours that have grown from the area's whaling heritage.

Beyond Barrouallie, villages such as Spring Village, Hermitage and Rutland Vale sit among farmland and forested hills. Accommodation is mostly small guesthouses, villas and beach houses, with more hotels around Kingstown and the southern coast.

For travellers, Saint Patrick works well as a day trip or a laid-back base for the leeward coast: it is close to hiking routes, waterfalls and sailing anchorages, and is easily reached by road from Kingstown and Argyle International Airport.
