About Saint George

Saint George Parish occupies the southern end of Saint Vincent island and is the administrative and commercial heart of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Its capital, Kingstown, is also the national capital and the country's main port and urban centre, set around a sheltered natural harbour.

The parish reflects the island's colonial and maritime history. Georgian-era landmarks such as St. George's Anglican Cathedral and St. Mary's Cathedral stand near the centre of Kingstown, while Fort Charlotte overlooks the town from about 194 metres (636 feet) above sea level with views across Kingstown and toward the Grenadines.

One of the parish's best-known attractions is the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Botanic Gardens, founded in 1765 and among the oldest botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere. The busy Kingstown Market, the nearby fish market and beaches at Villa and Indian Bay add everyday local character within easy reach of the capital.

Beyond Kingstown, Saint George Parish includes the settlements of Arnos Vale, Calliaqua and Villa, as well as the small offshore islets of Young Island and Milligan Cay. These areas combine residential neighbourhoods, beachfront hotels and dining, and access to ferry services connecting with the Grenadines.

Saint George Parish is relevant for both leisure and business travellers because Kingstown hosts government offices, banks, the deep-water harbour and the cruise ship terminal. Its historic sites, gardens, markets, beaches and events such as Vincy Mas make it the country's main urban gateway.
