About Saint Thomas Middle Island
Saint Thomas Middle Island is a parish on the west coast of Saint Kitts, in the Caribbean nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It stretches from the island's green interior down to the Caribbean Sea and combines a quiet, rural character with some of the country's most important colonial history.
The area around Old Road Town was the site of the first British settlement in the Caribbean, founded by Sir Thomas Warner in the 1620s. St Thomas' Anglican Church in Middle Island, thought to be the oldest Anglican church in the Caribbean, contains the tombs of Warner and Samuel Jefferson, an ancestor of US President Thomas Jefferson.
The parish's defining attraction is Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built largely in the 17th and 18th centuries by enslaved Africans under British military command. The restored fortification sits high on a volcanic hill and offers sweeping views over the coast, surrounding villages and neighbouring islands.
Settlements include the parish capital Middle Island, the larger village of Old Road Town, and smaller communities such as Conyers, Half Way Tree, Lamberts and Godwin's Ghaut. Around them, the landscape mixes former sugar estates, forested ghauts, small farms and coastal roads, giving the parish a low-key, lived-in atmosphere away from Basseterre's busier streets.
For leisure travellers, the area provides heritage sites, scenery and access to the island's west coast, while its location roughly half an hour by road from Basseterre makes it a practical base or day-trip destination. Business visitors and groups also pass through for heritage tours, estate venues and transport connections to the capital and Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.
