About Saint Thomas Lowland
Saint Thomas Lowland is a coastal parish on the western side of Nevis, the smaller of the two islands that form the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is known for its relaxed, low-rise character, quiet villages and long stretches of sand, with the three-mile Pinney's Beach as its best-known shoreline and clear views toward St. Kitts across The Narrows.
Historically, Saint Thomas Lowland was the first parish established on Nevis and the site of Jamestown, the island's first British settlement. Local tradition says the early settlement was destroyed and abandoned after a late 17th-century tsunami, leaving the parish to develop as a mix of plantation estates and fishing villages.
Today the parish centres on Cotton Ground, its main village, with smaller communities such as Barnes Ghaut, Jessups Village and Westbury nearby. Resorts, beach villas and a championship golf course cluster around the Pinney's Beach area, while the island capital of Charlestown lies a short drive to the south.
Tourism and related services dominate the local economy. Visitors come for beach time, golf, sailing and a slower pace than larger Caribbean islands, and the parish's west-coast sunsets are a regular highlight. The interior rises toward Nevis Peak, with green hills and old estate roads inviting hiking and island exploration.
Saint Thomas Lowland works well for both leisure and business travel. It offers resort facilities and quiet accommodation close to Nevis's airport and ferry links, while Charlestown's government offices, banking and meeting venues are only minutes away.
