About Saint James Windward

Saint James Windward Parish covers the northeastern side of Nevis, the smaller of the two islands that make up Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is the largest parish by land area in the federation but one of the least populated, with a landscape of dry scrub, volcanic hills, small settlements and a coastline of beaches. Its capital, the village of Newcastle, sits beside Vance W. Amory International Airport, the main gateway to Nevis.

The parish's interior rises toward Nevis Peak and secondary heights such as Butler's Peak and Round Hill, while the coast opens onto the Narrows facing Saint Kitts. Colonial history survives in sugar plantation ruins at Eden Brown, New River and Coconut Walk, and the restored Cottle Church near Camps recalls the island's 19th-century past. Newcastle Pottery continues a local craft tradition that dates back generations.

The northern shore holds several long sandy beaches, including Newcastle Beach, Lover's Beach and Long Haul Bay, along with Nisbet Beach and the sheltered waters at Oualie Beach. These spots offer swimming, snorkeling and views across to Saint Kitts, while the more easterly coastline becomes rocky and undeveloped.

Visitors can combine beach time with hiking on Nevis Peak, pottery and plantation visits, and easy access to the rest of Nevis by road from Newcastle. The presence of the Medical University of the Americas also gives the parish a steady student and professional population alongside its beach-resort tourism.

Saint James Windward works well as a quiet, low-rise base for exploring Nevis: it provides the island's airport, several beachfront hotels and guesthouses, and a relaxed alternative to the busier tourism hubs, making it suitable for leisure travellers, small business trips and longer stays.
