About Vrancea
Focșani is the capital of Vrancea County in eastern Romania, set on the Milcov River in the historical region of Moldavia. Known locally as the City of the Union, it grew up near the former boundary between Moldavia and Wallachia and remains closely associated with the 1859 unification of the Romanian Principalities.
The Milcov River once marked the frontier between the two principalities, and Focșani developed as a busy trading town whose annual fairs drew merchants from across the region. The surrounding Vrancea hills support a long winemaking tradition, while the city itself was documented in the 16th century and rebuilt after fires and earthquakes.
Focșani's compact centre is built around Union Square, where the Obelisk of Unity commemorates the union of 1859. Other landmarks include the Heroes' Mausoleum, the St. John the Baptist Church, Casa Alaci, which houses the Museum of History and Archaeology, the Municipal Theatre and the shaded Grădina Publică gardens.
As the administrative, commercial and cultural hub of Vrancea, Focșani serves a region known for agriculture and wine production, including the Odobești and Panciu vineyards. The city sits on the E85 road corridor linking Bucharest with Moldova, making it a practical stop for business travellers and a gateway to local wine estates and the Carpathian foothills.
Leisure visitors come for Unification Day celebrations, wine tours and the relaxed regional atmosphere, while business and event travellers find a compact, walkable county centre with hotels, restaurants and transport connections to the wider region.
