About Sibiu

Sibiu is a historic city in Transylvania, Romania, known for its well-preserved Saxon old town, cobblestone streets and colourful houses with small attic windows that resemble watchful eyes. A former European Capital of Culture in 2007, the city combines a strong medieval heritage with a lively contemporary arts and café scene.

Founded by Saxon settlers in the 12th century and long known as Hermannstadt, Sibiu grew into an important trading and craft centre. Landmarks such as the Large Square, Small Square and Huet Square are surrounded by Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, while the Council Tower, the Bridge of Lies and the Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral mark the historic heart of the city.

The old town is divided between the Upper Town, with its main squares, Brukenthal Palace and Romania's oldest museum, and the quieter Lower Town, reached by stairways and fortified passageways. Just outside the centre, the ASTRA Museum is one of Europe's largest open-air ethnographic museums, set in the Dumbrava forest.

Sibiu is also a regional centre for business, education and events. The Sibiu International Theatre Festival, jazz and film events, and a popular Christmas Market bring visitors throughout the year, while cafés, wine bars and restaurants serve a mix of Romanian, Saxon and Transylvanian dishes.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Sibiu offers a compact, walkable historic centre, modern conference and transport links, and easy access to the fortified churches and villages of southern Transylvania.
