About Iași
Iași is the capital of Iași County and the historic capital of Moldavia, set in northeastern Romania near the border with the Republic of Moldova. Known for its universities, monasteries and literary heritage, it has long been regarded as one of Romania's cultural capitals, with a lively student population and a skyline of domes and neo-Gothic towers.
The city's landmark is the Palace of Culture, a neo-Gothic palace built in the early 20th century on the site of the former royal court and now housing four museums. Nearby stand the Metropolitan Cathedral, the ornate Three Hierarchs Monastery and Golia Monastery, while the National Theatre and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University anchor the central boulevard.
Neighbourhoods such as Copou, Tătărași, Nicolina, Păcurari and the historic centre each have a distinct character, from leafy hilltop parks and Romania's oldest botanical garden to student cafés, markets and everyday residential life. Copou Hill and its botanical garden are among the city's favourite green escapes.
Iași is also a growing business and technology hub, with an expanding IT and services sector, a strong university ecosystem and events such as FILIT, the International Festival of Literature and Translation, drawing visitors each year. The food scene mixes Moldavian dishes, local wines and a café culture shaped by students and academics.
For both leisure and business travellers, Iași offers a walkable centre, historic landmarks, a strong conference and university environment, and easy air access through Iași International Airport, making it the main gateway to northeastern Romania and Moldavia.
