About Áncash

Huaraz is the capital of Peru's Áncash region and the main gateway to the Cordillera Blanca, one of the highest tropical mountain ranges in the world. Set at roughly 3,050 metres in the Callejón de Huaylas valley, the city looks out toward snow-covered peaks such as Huascarán, Peru's highest mountain, and combines Andean market life with an active outdoor-adventure scene.

The city was founded as San Sebastián de Huaraz in 1574 and has been rebuilt after major earthquakes, most notably the 1970 Ancash earthquake that destroyed much of its colonial centre. Today the grid around the Plaza de Armas mixes modern buildings with a few surviving heritage corners such as José Olaya street, while the nearby Áncash Archaeological Museum holds pre-Columbian stone carvings from the Chavín, Recuay and Wari cultures.

Travellers use Huaraz as a base for day hikes and multi-day treks to glacial lakes including Laguna 69, Laguna Parón and Laguna Churup, as well as for visits to Pastoruri Glacier, Huascarán National Park and the pre-Inca ceremonial site of Chavín de Huántar. Within the city, the Mercado Central, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Solitude and viewpoints such as the Mirador de Rataquenua offer a closer look at daily life and the surrounding mountains.

Huaraz spreads across the districts of Huaraz and Independencia, with the traditional centre around La Soledad and Belén and newer areas such as Centenario extending outward. The city has a practical range of hotels, hostels, trekking agencies, cafés and restaurants serving both Peruvian and international food.

As the administrative and commercial hub of Áncash, Huaraz also hosts regional government offices, a university and growing tourism infrastructure. Its combination of high-altitude scenery, Andean culture and accessible outdoor activities makes it relevant for adventure tourists, independent travellers and visitors attending regional meetings or events.

Áncash Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to September is the most reliable period for trekking and mountain views, with sunny days and cold nights. December to March brings more rain, greener landscapes and fewer hikers on some routes.

How to Get Around

Huaraz is compact enough to explore the centre on foot, while colectivos, taxis and mototaxis connect the main neighbourhoods and nearby trailheads. Organized tours, private transfers and rental vehicles are common for reaching lakes, glaciers and archaeological sites outside the city.

Where to Stay

The centre around the Plaza de Armas and La Soledad is convenient for restaurants, agencies and transport, while Centenario and Independencia offer quieter options and mountain views. Many trekkers also choose hostels and lodges geared toward early-morning departures.

Food & Drink

Huaraz serves hearty Andean dishes such as picante de cuy, pachamanca and regional trout, alongside set lunch menus and café culture. The Mercado Central is a good place to try local produce, cheese and street snacks, while restaurants around the centre range from casual Peruvian to international.
