About Oro

Popondetta is the capital of Oro Province, formerly Northern Province, on the north coast of Papua New Guinea. Set among volcanic plains, rivers and tropical rainforest, it is a compact provincial centre that serves as the main gateway to Mount Lamington, the Kokoda Track region and the World War II sites around Buna, Gona and Sanananda.

The town grew after the 1951 eruption of Mount Lamington destroyed the former administrative centre at Higaturu and reshaped settlement in the province. That volcanic and wartime history remains central to the area's identity, with memorials, abandoned wartime airfields and relics scattered across the surrounding district.

Visitors use Popondetta as a base for trekking the Kokoda Track, seeing the habitat of the Queen Alexandra's birdwing butterfly, and exploring the Tufi fjords on the coast. Local markets, oil palm plantations and government offices give the town a practical working character rather than a typical tourist atmosphere.

Popondetta is connected to Port Moresby and other Papua New Guinea destinations through Girua Airport, making it relevant for business travellers, researchers, aid workers and history-focused visitors. Its tropical climate, cultural diversity and position near major trekking and diving areas make it a distinctive but understated destination in northern Papua New Guinea.
